The strategic importance of Greece as an energy gateway for Southeastern Europe and Ukraine was stressed by US Ambassador to Athens Kimberly Guilfoyle in a post.
“As part of the US President’s bold energy program, we are achieving results by increasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows from the US, via Greece, to Southeastern Europe and Ukraine,” Kimberly Guilfoyle said, adding that the move contributes to the diversification of supply sources and confirms that “energy security is synonymous with national security.” The US ambassador’s appointment comes at a time when Ukraine is seeking more LNG imports through Greek terminals and the so-called “Vertical Corridor”, while the first shipment of US LNG to the Ukrainian market via Greece and the Trans-Balkan Transportation System has already been launched.
“I look forward to travelling to Bucharest and Sofia for The Economist magazine’s Roundtable with the Romanian government, as well as discussions with regional partners on enhancing energy security along the ‘Vertical Corridor’,” US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle added in her post. This axis has emerged in recent months as a key area of US and European mobility, with the aim of channeling more LNG from Greece to Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, reducing the region’s dependence on Russian gas.
