Haritsis’ resignation was made official today in a letter sent to members of the New Left Party.

In a post following this decision, Alexis Haritsis said:

I have decided to submit my resignation as President of New Left. It is not a decision I have taken lightly. From the very beginning I have believed that the New Left deserved and deserves a leading role in the formation of a broad political and social alliance.

.

In the Left and the New Left today there are two divergent strategies. On the one hand, the choice of ideological self-sufficiency and folding because the correlations are difficult. On the other hand, the choice of openness, of trying to achieve convergence and the formation of a front against the Right. Everyone knows that the latter is the policy I am fighting for and will continue to fight for. Not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. And I believe that this direction is a majority in society and is shared by many members and friends of the New Left.

It expresses an existing and strong demand: to reconstruct the left government perspective against a neoliberal-conservative dominance with far-right characteristics. And it is a position that has given our Parliamentary Group the strength to fight every day against the right-wing arrogance of the regime. But it is not the direction chosen by the majority of the Political Bureau and the Central Committee of the New Left. I do not see opponents in the comrades who have a different opinion; but I do see a real political disagreement, with history and depth, which cannot keep us tied down in immobility. We must move forward. That is why I consider it necessary to resign. To the question ”why now” I answer that because the political situation is characterized by constant fluidity, all this time I have consciously tried to keep the New Left’s stance open.

Let’s not rush to close roads. Instead, let us contribute and create the conditions for something broader. But it is now clear that the majority in the party institutions has chosen a radically different path. And I respect that choice. But it has a responsibility to take over the leadership of the party. I am not giving up the position I stand for.

.

I will continue to fight for her. Because I believe it is linked to something very simple and yet very essential: the need for the left to be socially useful. To create developments and to give a way out to people who today feel suffocated. We are at a moment when what is needed is not just one more registration of forces, but a substantial shift in the correlations with radical edges, duration and perspective.

And we must create this perspective through our actions, however painful they may be. In society today there is a strong current of questioning of the current grim reality. The responsibility of the Left is to meet it. Not with fearfulness or rhetorical grandstanding. But with confidence, seriousness and clear speech. I will continue to contribute in this direction with all my strength, because what is being judged today is not positions or roles, but whether we can overcome deadlocks and open up new possibilities. I thank all my comrades from the bottom of my heart for this valuable march, the struggle continues.”
