PAOK went ahead on the road against Volos on the 26th and final day of the Super League regular season, but the Thessalians turned the game around and celebrated a great 2-1 victory.

With a fine goal from Yeremeyev on 14 minutes, PAOK looked like they would have an easy task at Panthessaliko, but Volos reacted afterwards and missed several chances before finally… shocking the Thessaloniki side. Martinez equalized for the hosts on 64 minutes and Urtado completed the upset with a goal in the 5th minute of stoppage time, giving his team a great result.

Volos succeeded with the three points to move into the play-offs for places 5-8, while PAOK missed the chance to enter the Super League title battle as leaders.

The game

PAOK started the game strongly and closed Volos down, pushing for a goal from the opening minutes. Yeremeyev and Hatsidis were particularly active for the Thessaloniki side and it didn’t take long for the goal to come. On 14 minutes, the Swedish striker received the ball in the area with impressive energy and delivered a perfect shot to give his team a 1-0 lead in the match.

At 20 minutes, he even came close to providing an assist, as his cross from the right found Hatsidis in the area, but the young striker’s header was barely deflected by Siambanis.

The rest of the game was not the same for the Thessaloniki side, however, as some mistakes in defence allowed Volos to gain some psychology and yardage on the pitch. First, on 28 minutes, Kenziora allowed Urtado to reach Tsiftsis’ goal before being cut off at the last minute, while a similar mistake by Lovren put the same player in a one-on-one position, but his pinch in front of the PAOK goalkeeper sent the ball just wide.

Volos also had a misplaced header from Karga after a corner, but failed to reach the equaliser and the Thessaloniki side went into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, PAOK again came out stronger, but Tyson wasted a counter attack on 58 minutes and Volos started to look for their own chances in the match, missing a crucial chance with Lambrou unable to beat Tsifcis with a close-range effort on 58 minutes.

The Thessalians finally managed to get the equaliser on 64 minutes, with Abanda turning in from the left, Tsifcis misjudging the ball and Martinez slotting into an empty net to make it 1-1 in the game.

The equaliser put PAOK on the offensive and the game was then played in Volos’ half, but the hosts were again more ‘threatening’ as the Thessaloniki side failed to find any serious chances for a second goal of their own.

The Thessalians thus managed to drop the… bomb in 90+5′, with Urtado stealing the ball and going alone across the visitors’ goalkeeper, whom he passed to place the ball into an empty net and make it 2-1 in the match.

That was the final score, with Volos celebrating a very important victory and PAOK finishing the Super League regular season on the left.
