A meteorite disintegrated yesterday Saturday as it entered the atmosphere over the northeastern tip of the US, and the deafening explosions upset many residents, the US space agency (NASA) said.
The meteor broke apart over the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire at 14:06 (local time, 21:06 in Greece), Jennifer Doren, a NASA spokeswoman, told the French news agency (AFP).
“This fireball is not associated with a meteor shower, it was a natural object and not a re-entry of space debris or a satellite,” Doren said.
The meteorite had developed a speed of more than 120,000km/h and disintegrated about 64km from the ground.
“The energy released is estimated to be equivalent to 300 tonnes of TNT, which explains the deafening explosions,” the NASA spokeswoman explained.
On social media platforms, several users reported that the explosions were so powerful that their homes were shaken.
🚨 WOW! Another video of the “explosion” in the Boston area really captures how LOUD the boom was
It’s looking like the cause was a “significant” meteor crashing through the atmosphere and burning up, as indicated by heat signatures via satellite, per @NStewWX
