Four people, a teacher and three students, were killed and 20 wounded by gunfire this afternoon at a primary school in Karamanmaras province in southern Turkey, the local governor said.
“Unfortunately, we regret to announce that four people have been killed. Among the victims are a teacher and three students. We also have 20 injured,” Governor Mukherem Unluer told reporters.
Images released by the private news agency IHA show a person, his body and face covered, being carried in an ambulance, along with parents of students crying outside the school.
According to initial reports, the gunman first fired into the air in the schoolyard, then moved into the school and continued shooting.
Ambulances and police forces have been deployed to the scene.
Although armed attacks on schools are very rare in Turkey, today’s incident comes a day after an armed attack on a school in Siverek, Sanliurfa.
