The news of the death of Marios Economou, who breathed his last breath at the age of 33, following a serious motorcycle accident, has caused deep mourning in Greek sport.
The international centre-back had been in a critical condition at Ioannina hospital for the past few days, fighting for his life. However, the results of medical tests carried out in the previous days were particularly unfavourable, confirming his irreversible state of health.
Marios Economou was born in Ioannina on October 6, 1992 and started his football career in the youth teams of PAS Giannina. His talent quickly led him to the first team, before he pursued a significant career abroad.
In 2013 he was transferred to Cagliari and then donned the shirt of Bologna, where he established himself in Serie A. His spells at SPAL and Bari followed, before returning to Greece for AEK Athens in 2018. In 2020 he continued his career at Copenhagen.
He made his debut with the Greek national team in 2016, in a friendly match against Montenegro, and has been a reliable solution in the representative team’s defensive line for years.
In a statement, PAS Giannina said farewell to their former player with touching words:
“Today the PAS Giannina family is in mourning. Marios Economou, a boy who earned the love and respect of all of us, has left us prematurely. Always with a smile, always with kindness.”
His loss leaves a big void in Greek football and causes deep sadness to those who worked with him and knew him on and off the pitch.
