The US Operation Freedom, aimed at safely disentangling ships from the Strait of Hormuz, is being implemented from today, Monday 4 May.
Donald Trump said that, at the request of several countries, the US will help coordinate the safe passage of ships, but without a direct military escort. The plan is based on the cooperation of states, insurance and shipping agencies.
At the same time, Iran warned that any US involvement would be seen as a violation of the ceasefire, escalating tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, a tanker was hit by unidentified missiles near the United Arab Emirates, with no casualties or environmental impact.
Note that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for about 20 percent of the world’s energy, has remained effectively closed since the conflict began in late February.
