The first 12 of a total of 22 defendants in the case of illegal subsidies from OPEKEPE in Crete were released after their pleas.

The investigator and the prosecutor agreed that the majority of the accused should be subjected to the restrictive conditions of not leaving the country and appearing at the police station of their region. In addition, a monetary bail of 5 or 10 thousand euros was set for some of them.

The accused are said to have denied before the investigating judge what is attributed to them in the case file for the action of a criminal organisation that defrauded the OPEKEPE.

The apologies will continue on Saturday when the remaining ten defendants, including the two brothers, as well as a deputy mayor in a municipality of Crete, which operated a Declaration Reception Centre, are expected to appear in the interrogation office. They are accused of playing a leading role in the operation of the criminal group, as well as other defendants who allegedly played a central role in the five-year deception of the payment body for EU and EU agricultural policy.
