A lengthy statement has been issued by the New Left, following the mass resignations of its members, the independence of six MPs and the resignation of Efi Achtsioglou.

More specifically, the New Left characterises the dissolution of the party’s parliamentary group as “expected”, noting “without evasion” that “the selection of former members of our party is directly linked to the establishment of the ELAS by Alexis Tsipras”.

The entire statement of the New Left

“The withdrawal of members and MPs from the New Left and the dissolution of its parliamentary group was to be expected. It does not surprise us, since it was planned for a long time, but it saddens us both on a political and comradely level. With this development, a Parliamentary Group with a significant presence and work in Parliament ceases to exist, which weakens the left-wing opposition to the Mitsotakis government.

Their withdrawal could have taken place earlier, in order to avoid paralysis phenomena. Besides, as long as initiatives to form other parties were delayed, decisions to leave were postponed.

Without evasion, the selection of the former members of our party is directly linked to the establishment of ELAS by Alexis Tsipras.

It is a formation that is in no way an expression of the “Popular Front”, nor does it constitute a pole that can unite different forces. It is a formation that is personal, leader-like, without internal processes, which presupposes the dissolution of parties, excludes partnerships and considers that it has no “homogeneous spaces”. It thus contributes to the devaluation of politics and objectively contradicts the slogan “Politics Returns”, which we put forward when we founded the New Left.

In any case, we wish the departing comrades a good continuation of their journey. The New Left continues.

It aims to achieve the goals voted at our recent congress – and by those who left. We will continue to work for the reconstitution of the Left, so that it becomes, in the movements, in the social spaces, in the unions and in Parliament, the competitive force against the domination of the Right, the rise of the Far Right and the politics of the “average”. For the overthrow of the Mitsotakis government. For the production of a program that will bring the needs of society to the forefront.”
