Flight cancellations, trees uprooted by the weight of snow and appeals from authorities for residents to be careful: a late snowstorm hit Moscow today in the middle of spring, French Press Agency reporters found
The Russian Meteorological Center has declared an orange alert in the capital, which will remain in effect until tomorrow morning, Tuesday.
Dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed at Moscow’s airports, with the one in Vnukovo experiencing the most problems, according to Russian media.
Under the weight of the snow, many trees were uprooted, mainly in the city centre, damaging cars and blocking pavements, French News Agency reporters found.
“True winter has returned,” Russian television station Pervy Kanal noted.
Large piles of snow have formed in the capital’s suburbs and parked vehicles have been covered by several centimetres of snow.
Moscow authorities said via Telegram that they expect the weather to deteriorate even further during the day with “heavy rainfall” and “wind gusts of up to 23 metres per second”.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin urged residents to be careful.
