Notis Mitarakis referred to the importance of strengthening European economic integration and Europe’s competitiveness, participating as a keynote speaker at the opening of the 6th edition of the Green Transition Forum in Sofia, in the presence of Bulgaria’s Vice President Iliana Yotova.

During his remarks, the Greek MEP stressed that Europe must invest more in energy, defence, technology, raw materials and deepening financial markets in order to strengthen its resilience and strategic autonomy in an environment of increased international challenges.

He particularly emphasized the strategic role of the vertical energy corridor, noting that it is a priority for Greece and an important tool for Europe’s energy security and autonomy.

Mr. Mitarakis pointed out that despite the great successes of the European Union in recent decades in the areas of peace, democracy and freedom of movement, the next big challenge is to strengthen its global competitiveness without undermining sustainable development.

Referring to the Greek economy, he stressed that the country has made significant progress in recent years, recording growth higher than the Eurozone average, historically low unemployment rates, increased investment and a gradual reduction in public debt.

“This course proves that strong growth, fiscal stability and credible participation in European governance can be achieved with planning, consistency and reforms,” he said, expressing confidence that the conference proceedings will make a substantial contribution to the debate on the future and competitiveness of Europe.
