The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is proceeding with a new programme to recruit an additional 1,000 unemployed persons with disabilities (PWDs) in first and second level local government organisations, with the aim of increasing the employability of unemployed PWDs and tackling discrimination in the labour market.

As stated in a relevant announcement, this is the first time that the programme has been extended to second-tier local authorities. A total of 3,000 jobs have been created for this purpose.

Labour and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameos said: “In line with the ongoing effort to combat unemployment, we are supporting individual social groups that have greater difficulties in penetrating the labour market and creating 1,000 additional jobs by strengthening the employment programme for persons with disabilities in Local Authorities throughout the country. Equal access to employment opportunities makes a significant contribution to promoting social inclusion and real equality.

At the same time, we have strengthened Local Authorities with a total of 3,000 employees since the launch of the programme, thus contributing to better staffing. We will continue our relentless efforts to offer equal opportunities for all in the labour market.”

The programme provides for an additional 1,000 full-time or part-time positions to be filled by persons with disabilities registered in the digital register of unemployed persons of the Public Employment Service (PES).

The duration of the program is 18 months and subsidizes 75% of salary and contributions, with a maximum of 750 euros per month.
