French President Emmanuel Macron referred to the possibility of a “UN framework” regarding a future mission to guarantee the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz after the guns are silenced, judging that this “could help”.
The French government will raise the issue “with (its) main partners, especially the permanent member states of the UN Security Council” to consider the possibility of “having a UN framework for what we want to do in Hormuz,” Mr. Macron after the Brussels summit.
It is an “exploratory” initiative “that we have started and we will see in the coming days if it has a chance” of coming to fruition, he added.
He explained that he had discussed this with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European leaders.
According to Emmanuel Macron, “France is ready, together with other countries, to take responsibility for a system of escorting ships in the strait, as part of a mission” but one that would have nothing to do with war.
On the contrary, “we will not participate in any force in the Strait in the context of the war operations and bombing under way” in the Middle East, the French president insisted.
