Lebanon demands the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from its territory, as well as the return of Lebanese prisoners and displaced persons, as part of negotiations with Israel, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said today ahead of a new round of talks on Thursday in Washington.

In a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, the Lebanese prime minister also said his country would need “500 million euros to address the humanitarian crisis over the next six months.”

For his part, Macron said Paris would help Beirut in preparing for talks with the Israeli side, even though the French government is not represented at the negotiating table. France, which has historic ties with Lebanon, has sought to play an active role in the talks but has met resistance from both Israel and the United States.

Referring to the negotiations between the US and Iran, Emmanuel Macron stressed the need to continue the fragile ceasefire and not to give an excuse to restart the war, as the differences between the two sides cannot be resolved “in a few hours or days”.
