Iran is threatening to blockade the Red Sea if the US blockade of Iranian ports is maintained and considers the blockade likely to constitute a ceasefire violation.
If the United States maintains the naval blockade and “creates conditions of insecurity for Iranian merchant ships and tankers”, this will be “a prelude” to a violation of the ceasefire, which has been in effect since April 8, said General Ali Abdollahi, head of the Iranian armed forces command.
“The powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic will not allow any export or import to the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman and the Red Sea,” the statement carried by Iranian media said.
