The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bager Ghalibaf, said today that the United States is planning a ground offensive while conducting public diplomatic efforts to end the war.

“The enemy is sending public messages of negotiation and dialogue while secretly planning a ground offensive,” Gallibaf said in a statement carried by Iran’s official IRNA news agency.

“Our men are waiting for the arrival of US soldiers on the ground so that they can attack them and punish their regional allies once and for all,”

Galibaf called on Iranians to unite, stressing that the country is involved in “a major global war” that is “at its most critical stage.”

“We are convinced that we can punish the United States, make it repent for attacking Iran and vigorously assert our legitimate rights,”

According to the Washington Post, which cited US officials yesterday, Saturday, the Pentagon is preparing for ground operations that will last several weeks.

Such operations would not amount to a full-scale invasion of Iran, according to these officials, but would include raids on Iranian territory by special forces and other troops.

The US military announced yesterday the arrival in the Middle East of the amphibious operations ship Tripoli, which will lead a naval force consisting of “approximately 3.500” sailors and Marines.
