Explosions were heard in the Iranian capital today, a French News Agency reporter reports, hours after Israel announced it had launched large-scale strikes overnight.

The explosions were heard in central Tehran where anti-aircraft defense systems were activated. It is not known at this time who the target was.

The city was rocked by powerful explosions overnight.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said today that it destroyed a plane used by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport overnight.

“This deprives the Iranian regime of another strategic asset,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a farsi post on the X platform.

The Israeli military said the plane had been used by senior Iranian officials and military officers for domestic and foreign travel and to coordinate with allied countries.

Hamenei was killed on February 28 in an Israeli airstrike in the Iranian capital.

Mehrabad is one of Tehran’s oldest airports that now serves domestic and regional flights. In addition to being Iran’s busiest civilian airport, it is a dual-use facility that houses elements of the Air Force.

Mehrabad airport has been bombed several times in recent days.
