The Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran was hit yesterday by a “missile” that caused no damage to infrastructure and no injuries, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA-IAEA) said.

The Vienna-based UN agency “was informed by Iran that a missile hit the facilities of the Bushehr nuclear power plant last night. There was no damage to the plant or injuries among staff,” an IAEA post on X said.

Director General Rafael Grossi “reiterates the call for restraint during the war to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident.”

Russia, for its part, denounced “an irresponsible and totally unacceptable strike against the inner perimeter of the plant (….) just a few meters from the operating plant.”

The Bushehr station is Russian designed and built and Russian experts are employed at it.

“We have warned Israel and the United States countless times (…) that it is categorically unacceptable to endanger the life and health of a large number of Russian citizens at the station,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. She called on the two countries to avoid attacks that could cause radiological or ecological disaster at the regional level.

The Bushehr plant, the only one in operation in Iran, has a generating capacity of 1,000 megawatts, a small fraction of the country’s electricity needs.
