A joint statement welcoming the Iran ceasefire agreement was issued by leaders of European and Canadian nations, including Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The leaders say the goal should be to negotiate “a swift and lasting end to the war in the coming days” and “this can only be achieved through diplomatic means.”
The statement is signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Murch, UK Prime Minister Kir Starmers, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Weten, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.
The statement reads as follows:
“We welcome the two-week ceasefire agreed today between the United States and Iran. We thank Pakistan and all partners who helped facilitate this important agreement.
The goal now must be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war in the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means.
We strongly encourage rapid progress towards a meaningful negotiated agreement. This will be crucial to protecting Iran’s civilian population and ensuring security in the region. It can also prevent a serious global energy crisis.
We support these diplomatic efforts. To this end, we are in close contact with the United States and other partners.
We call on all sides to implement the ceasefire, including Lebanon.
Our governments will help ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
