The two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran hangs in the balance, with US President Donald Trump issuing fresh threats against Tehran, saying that if the deal is not honoured the “firing will begin”. Similarly, the Revolutionary Guards warn they will “fulfill their duty and respond” if Israel does not stop attacks in Lebanon that killed 254 people yesterday.
Israel, as well as the Trump administration, argue that operations against Hezbollah are continuing as the cessation of attacks against the Lebanese group is not included in the terms of the ceasefire agreement, with Tehran, for its part, arguing otherwise and denouncing a violation of the ceasefire by Tel Aviv.
At the same time, Pakistan, which has assumed the crucial role of mediator in the US-Iran talks, also criticized Israel, noting that its actions undermine international efforts to achieve peace and called on the international community to “take urgent and concrete measures” to prevent further attacks.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced that they killed Ali Yusuf Harshi, right-hand man and nephew of Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem in yesterday’s bombing in Beirut.
Due to the hostile climate that remains, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is in doubt, with the Iranian deputy foreign minister telling the BBC that Tehran will “ensure safe passage” only “after the US stops aggression”.
