The number of immigrant naturalizations in Germany in 2025 has reached a record high, with Syria the most frequently represented nationality for the fifth year in a row.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, 332,500 foreigners were naturalised as Germans in 2025, 14% more than in the previous year.

Here are some figures as compiled by Reuters.

One in five people naturalized in 2025 were Syrian. However, compared to 2024, the number of Syrians who acquired German citizenship decreased by 21%.

Many Syrians who arrived as refugees in 2015 and 2016 became eligible for naturalization during 2024.

The statistics agency attributed the increase to the June 2024 reforms that reduced the necessary residence time to obtain citizenship from eight to five years and also allowed dual citizenship.

After Syrians, the most frequently represented nationalities were Turks (10%, 34,100 people) and Russians (6%, 19,700 people).

The Bosnians recorded particularly strong annual growth (126%, 8.000 people), United States citizens (100%, 6,600 people) and Albanians (97%, 6,100 people).

The number of people naturalized through laws restoring to individuals and their descendants the citizenship stripped from them by Nazi Germany increased by 61% to 12.000.
