A car has swept away a crowd of pedestrians in the centre of Leipzig, German media reports.

As reported by local MDR channel, citing local police, two people died and several people were injured – one of them seriously – when a car swept away pedestrians in the centre of Leipzig, in eastern Germany, on Monday afternoon.

A major police operation is underway in the city, according to MDR Sachsen.

A police spokesman said a passenger car crashed into the crowd on Grimaise Strasse. “There are several injured” but police are currently unable to give further details on the exact circumstances of the incident and the severity of the injuries.

There have been several car attacks in Germany in recent years, including at the Christmas markets in Berlin in 2016 and Magdeburg in 2024 and at the ver.di union demonstration in Munich in early 2025.
