The Civil Defence in the Gaza Strip said yesterday, Sunday, that nine people had been killed in Israeli strikes in the southern part of the Palestinian enclave, devastated after more than two years of war, where a fragile ceasefire continues to be in place.

The night before last Saturday, “Israeli strikes targeted police checkpoints in the Al-Mawashi area of Khan Younis,” resulting in the “martyrdom” of eight people, according to Mohamed al-Muwair, a spokesman for this emergency aid agency, part of the state apparatus of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

Another man was killed yesterday Sunday “when he was targeted by Israeli forces’ fire” at a roundabout in Khan Younis, he told the French News Agency.

Footage captured by AFP cameramen shows bodies being taken to the morgue of the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, then deposited on the ground in white shrouds. A woman screamed, surrounded by crying men and children, at the funerals.

“Every day the enemy persecutes and murders,” said Ahmed let Sufi, a Palestinian who lost relatives.

When contacted by French News Agency to seek comment on these strikes, the Israeli army did not respond.

However, it issued a statement saying that it had “eliminated” on Saturday night into Sunday “a cell of ten armed Hamas terrorists operating in the central part” of the Gaza Strip and a “terrorist” who “violated” the ceasefire agreement and “repeatedly crossed the yellow line” that defines a sector of the enclave where ground elements of the Israeli armed forces have been deployed.

Israel and Hamas have frequently accused each other of violating the ceasefire since it came into force on 10October 2025, after two years of devastating war. Violence has continued in the enclave at the same time as the Israeli military has been conducting an aerial bombing campaign in Iran since Feb. 2828 and striking Hezbollah in Lebanon, where ground army units are also operating.

At least 702 Palestinians have been killed since October 10 10th, according to the Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip, part of the Hamas authorities, whose numbers are described as reliable by the UN.

Given the restrictions imposed on media in the Gaza Strip and the difficulties of accessing the field, AFP notes that it is unable to independently verify accounts and statements from either side.
