The return of Alexandros Giotopoulos to Korydallos Prison, following the overturning of the decision to release him, was discussed last night on Action 24by the Minister of Justice.

“The legal reasoning behind the decision is extremely important, because the Supreme Court clarifies an issue that I believe the Court of Appeals misinterpreted. That is, when there is a newer provision that stipulates a longer period for serving the sentence, the Court of Appeals ruled that the older provision—which was more lenient—applied, whereas the Supreme Court held that it pertains to a different situation, one unrelated to the past. “Therefore, it ruled that the 2021 provision regarding the 25-year sentence must be correctly applied,” noted Giorgos Floridis.

In fact, “he has shown absolutely no remorse” for his actions, he emphasized.

“The Supreme Court says that whether the convicted person has shown even the slightest remorse must play a very significant role. He has shown that not only is there no remorse here (…) but he couldn’t care less,” he said pointedly.

In the same context, he explained that “when you request early release before the maximum sentence has been served, subject to certain conditions, for it to be granted, you must have demonstrated through your behavior that you have truly learned your lesson.”

Regarding Giotopoulos’s age, the Minister replied: “I don’t want to act as a judge, but this 83-year-old has 17 murders to his name.”
