A fire broke out Monday morning in a suburb of Los Angeles, California, and “spread dangerously fast,” prompting the fire department to order the hasty evacuation of its fields, according to a statement from the department.

The fire broke out shortly after 10:50 (local time; 00:50 GMT) in Simi Valley, some sixty kilometres northwest of Los Angeles, home to more than 100,000 people. “It is spreading dangerously fast and threatening buildings and infrastructure,” the fire department said, adding that “200 firefighters, three firefighting aircraft and six helicopters” were mobilized to deal with it.

The emergency evacuation order for residents covers four sectors of Simi Valley, according to the same source. A small section of the neighbouring community of Thawsend Oaks was simply given a “warning” for the time being.
