“The seven people were seriously injured, but their lives are not in danger and we can confirm that contrary to internet speculation, no one died,”
Police authorities arrested a man of Indian origin shortly after the incident in the centre of Derby town, which is about sixty kilometres north of Birmingham, police added, explaining that officers stopped the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident shortly after the incident and arrested the driver, a man in his 30s, who remains in custody.
“While we know this is something of concern, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is still a public danger,” said police, who asked anyone with information about the incident to contact them. It also clarified that the investigation was at a “preliminary” stage and did not release any information regarding the motive for this action or whether it was a premeditated act.
The car, a black Suzuki Swift, crashed into pedestrians at around 9:30pm local time yesterday, Saturday night.
The seven people who were injured were taken to the Royal Derby Hospital and the Queen’s Medical Centre, a medical centre located in the neighbouring city of Nottingham, police added.
North Derby MP Catherine Atkinson said she was “deeply shocked” in a post on social media.
“Please follow police recommendations and avoid the area. Anyone with information should contact (police) as soon as possible,” he added.
