Two suicide bombings took place yesterday in Blida, a town some 40 kilometres from the Algerian capital, Algiers, where Pope Leo IV was visiting, according to a Western source familiar with the matter who spoke to AFP today and based on images whose authenticity was verified by the news agency.
“Absolutely unequivocally, and this is confirmed by witnesses, there were two security incidents yesterday afternoon in Blida, incidents of a terrorist nature,” the source told AFP.
“Two suicide bombers were blown up and killed,” the source added, noting that the number of dead is currently unknown.
Images, whose authenticity was verified today by AFP, show two bodies in the Algerian city of Blida, while the African Union (AU) called it a terrorist attack but then retracted its statement.
