When the calendar shows the end of August, for many, the summer season seems to come full circle. But there are corners of Europe where the sun and sea refuse to give up. At the top of that list is Crete, which is emerging as one of the most ideal European destinations for those who choose to travel in September.

According to a recent feature in international travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller, the largest Greek island is included in the top seven choices on the old continent that offer ideal summer conditions and high temperatures outside of the peak season. Crete shares this distinction with other iconic destinations such as Naples, Nice, Hvar in Croatia, Antalya, Ibiza and Seville.

Where summer gets extended

Crete’s geographical position as the country’s southernmost large island gives it a unique privilege: keeping the summer breeze alive until the end. Conditions during the first month of autumn remain extremely pleasant, with the average maximum temperature reaching 27 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for those seeking sunshine without the stifling heat of July or August.

The publication focuses particularly on the unique atmosphere of Chania, making special mention of the idyllic Venetian harbour at sunset. This is the time when the island offers the possibility of a truly relaxing holiday by the sea. Although demand from abroad remains strong, the pace is decidedly gentler, allowing visitors to experience a more authentic and quality experience.

A vote of confidence in Greek tourism

The promotion of Crete by one of the world’s most prestigious and recognised travel media is an important injection of extroversion for the country’s tourism product.

This distinction not only confirms the strong dynamics of the island in international markets, but also reinforces the strategic objective of extending the tourist season. Crete proves in practice that it has all the ingredients to be an attractive, stand-alone Mediterranean destination, capable of enchanting travellers at any time of the year.
