The 25-year-old mother of the 3-year-old girl, who is in critical condition in the Children’s ICU of the Heraklion University General Hospital, was found to be in custody after she gave conflicting testimonies about the child’s serious injury.
The woman was brought before the Justice Department under an automatic procedure and was sentenced to three years in prison without parole and no right of appeal for making false statements.
Contradictory versions of the injury
According to the case, when the child was taken to hospital with convulsions, the 25-year-old had initially claimed she was injured on a playground after a fall.
But she later changed her statement, saying the incident happened inside the house while she was doing chores.
Today she and her Pakistani partner are brought before the investigating judge, now facing an upgraded charge of attempted murder while the child is still hospitalized intubated.
Other children in the family
At the same time, new evidence is causing concern among authorities about the other children in the family’s environment.
According to reports:
- The 10-month-old infant hospitalized at the General Hospital of Chania belongs to the sister of the 25-year-old woman,
- while allegedly being the child of the same man currently charged in the case.
Heavy criminal history
The criminal past of the accused, who has reportedly been of particular concern to the authorities in the past for:
- rape,
- stealing,
- domestic violence,
- gun law violations,
- and kidnapping minors.
Police authorities are also searching for his twin brother, looking into his possible involvement in the case.
