Homes burning, vehicles and buses consigned to the flames and families fleeing their homes made up the backdrop to last night’s fire in Belfast. The incidents that followed the bloody knife attack have now taken on wider political dimensions, reigniting the debate over immigration, the asylum system and the influence of social media.

Report – London

A 30-year-old Sudanese national charged with attempted murder, possession of a knife in a public place and threats to life is due in court today (10/6). The victim, a man in his 40s, remains hospitalized in serious condition with injuries to his face, eyes, neck and back.

Police said the defendant had arrived in Northern Ireland in 2023 and then received refugee status in the UK. That element dominates today’s headlines, with some of the British press calling for tighter controls on the asylum system and movement between Ireland and the UK.

The role of social media is also in focus. Police have urged people not to be influenced by interference from persons outside Northern Ireland, following the reposting by Elon Musk , of a post by Tommy Robinson, a well-known far-right activist in Britain, calling for continued protests.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill has described the house attacks and arson as “pure vagrancy”, denouncing hooded groups as targeting local communities themselves. Police remain on heightened alert as there are fears of further incidents in the coming days.
