Warming temperatures and dust transport from the Sahara to the Central and Eastern Mediterranean are set to affect the country. The reason, according to AtmoHub, an information hub for atmospheric composition in Greece, is the combination of three surface barometric systems (low – high – low), enhanced by the transport of gas masses in the upper layers of the atmosphere.

According to AtmoHub, strong southwesterly winds over dust sources in Algeria are blowing particles away, creating an extensive dust cloud that is expected to move towards our country in the coming days.

The thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere over Greece is expected to limit dust mainly in the upper layers of the troposphere, so that no significant deterioration of air quality near the surface is expected.

As AtmoHub points out in an update, from the early morning hours tomorrow, Wednesday 5 May, the dust will start to affect Western Greece, while by the end of the day the cloud will have extended to the whole of the mainland. Eastern Greece is also expected to be affected the following day.

In addition, towards the end of the week there is a possibility that the evolution of the phenomenon will vary, depending on the change in atmospheric conditions.

You can follow the forecast and the evolution of the phenomenon, according to data from the Atmospheric Monitoring Service CAMS on the AtmoHub web portal: https://portal.atmohub.gr/erimiki-skoni.
