AEK Athens won the Stoiximan Super League championship with two rounds to go, beating Panathinaikos 2-1 at the Allwyn Arena.

Marko Nikolic’s side were trailing but turned things around in the dying minutes and, combined with the draw at Faliro, mathematically secured the title.

Panathinaikos took a temporary lead through Tettei, who scored from close range after Cherin’s effort was stopped at the post.

AEK responded to tie the game in the 73rd minute through Zini, while in stoppage time, Joao Mario scored the goal that gave the Union the win and the championship.

After the final whistle, celebrations ensued in a packed New Philadelphia, with players, technical staff and fans alike celebrating the club’s 14th league title in its history.

The game was well-paced from the first half, with both teams creating important chances. AEK pressed harder after the 15th minute, while Panathinaikos had a cross and a disallowed goal from Varga late in the first half.

The second half was even more tense, with both teams missing key chances before the dramatic finish that decided the title in AEK’s favour.
