The dog belonging to the 25-year-old Turkish man who was shot and killed in Exarchia is being housed at the Athens City Municipality shelter.
The young man had taken his Pomeranian for a walk when he was shot and fell dead. The little dog remained by his side, finding refuge under the arm of its unfortunate owner. Despite efforts by residents and police officers to remove it from the scene, the dog seemed unwilling to leave him. According to reports, several residents expressed interest in taking care of him.
Following a prosecutor’s order, the Greek Police handed the dog over to the City of Athens shelter, where it is being temporarily housed.
In statements to ANT1, the Deputy Mayor for Social Solidarity, Urban Wildlife, and Animal Welfare of the Municipality of Athens, Mina Fountzoula, stated that the animal was not microchipped and will undergo the necessary veterinary examinations.
“It will be examined by our veterinarians, transferred to DIKEPAZ, microchipped, and given the necessary vaccinations. It is approximately six years old. It will then return to the shelter, where we will await the prosecutor’s instructions on next steps,” he stated.
