Anna Drouza was a guest on Natalia Germanou’s show “It Doesn’t Get Any Better” on Sunday afternoon and spoke openly about psychotherapy, her childhood traumas, her mother’s absence from her life, and her decision to step away from television to devote herself to raising her daughter.
The well-known journalist revealed that her personal journey was what prompted her to delve deeper into mental health issues.
“Having experienced a lot of childhood trauma, I began working with psychotherapists. I didn’t find good therapists right away, because that’s part of the challenge: being able to find the right person. I then underwent therapy for several years with exceptional therapists, and that led medeeply into this field. It helped me recognize what happened to me and believe in my worth as a person,” she said.
As she explained, psychotherapy helped her fundamentally change the way she views herself and her relationships with others.
“It helped me become calmer and gentler as a person, to stop worrying about whether people will love me or not, whether I’m worthy or not. I thought that, since it helped me so much, why not recommend it to others? Why not become a bridge of communication for issues that concern us all? In reality, most of us share the same anxieties and similar difficulties,” she said.
Her account of the most difficult experience of her life—the absence of her mother—was deeply moving.
“I grew up without a mother, and that was my greatest trauma. I remember once asking my therapist what it means for a child to grow up without a mother, and he replied, ‘It’s like being hit head-on by a train,’” she confessed.
Anna Drouzas explained that after her parents’ separation, she stayed with her father.
“My parents separated, my mother left, and my father raised me. I’m not saying this to create drama, but it was an unpleasant and unfortunate event in my life,” she noted.
In closing, she spoke about her daughter, Ariadne, and the decision she made to leave television so she could be present in her daily life.
“The only thing that mattered to me was that Ariadne have a mother. That’s why I left television. I wanted to be by her side, so she could see me, see my gaze and the love I had for her. That gave her strength and self-confidence. She realized she is worthy, that she is important to the people who love her. And Thanasis contributed to that, since he raised her with me for a few years while we were together,” she concluded.
