Greece recorded one of the largest reductions in road fatalities in the European Union in 2025 (22.3%) according to the European Transport Safety Council.
This was stated by its Executive Director, highlighting the actions of the responsible Deputy Minister for Transport, Transport and Tourism, the European Commission and the European Parliament. Minister and noting that “the measures taken are working”
Greece has achieved the second largest reduction in road fatalities among EU member states in 2025, according to data presented at an Economist conference in Crete (29/5) by the Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council, Antonio Avenozzo.
The European Commission’s data showed that road traffic fatalities in our country will fall by 22.3% in 2025 compared to 2024. The recipient of the positive signal from Brussels was the deputy transport minister, Konstantinos Kyranakis, who told the same conference: “Greece in 2025 had the second largest reduction in road fatalities in the EU. We started from very high, but the measures we took started to pay off.”
Avenozzo, in addition to the work of the ministry responsible and the new road safety code, praised civil society organisations involved in road safety, which he said “are providing a lot of help”. In particular, on Crete, he commented that there is indeed a reduction in fatal road accidents, adding, however, that the region remains in 2nd place in Greece in the list of fatalities.
Antonio Avenozzo, Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council noted the reduction in road traffic fatalities in our country in 2025 (Facebook/Economist Conferences) For his part, Mr. Kyranakis attributed the improvement to the new Road Traffic Code, the intensification of controls and the use of digital tools such as the road risk map and surveillance cameras. He also expressed the expectation that the downward trend in headlights will continue in 2026 through intensified efforts.
As for Crete, Mr. Kyranakis said that “there was a very big problem with behaviour on the roads” but that “last year Crete had a 37% reduction in deaths due to traffic accidents, one of the biggest reductions in Europe, because we decided to take measures and implement them.”
