The revival of the Greek shipbuilding industry through the cooperation of Greek shipping and shipbuilding companies was highlighted by the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, on the occasion of the signing of the agreement between Antipollution and ONEX for the construction of four modern anti-fouling vessels, with an option for four more, at the Elefsina Shipyards in the framework of the maritime exhibition Posidonia 2026.

The Minister congratulated the President of Antipollution, Byron Vassiliadis, and the President and CEO of ONEX, Panos Xenokostas, describing the cooperation as a positive example of a partnership that strengthens the Greek economy and the shipping industry.

Referring to the government’s strategy for the maritime sector, Mr. Kikilias noted that Greece is moving forward not only through its strong presence in the shipping, coastal shipping and yachting sectors, but also through the continuous upgrading of the country’s shipyards and port infrastructure.

“All of this is an integrated ecosystem that can create new and better paying jobs, boost growth and support local communities,” he said.

He particularly emphasized the fact that Greek companies are now choosing to outsource the construction of their ships to Greek shipyards, a development which, he stressed, is a key objective of the government’s policy for the revival of the sector.

The Minister also stressed that the development of shipbuilding activity can act as an incentive for the younger generation to reorient themselves towards the maritime professions, which, he said, offer significant career prospects and decent wages.

In conclusion, Mr. Kikilias expressed the hope that this initiative will serve as an example to be emulated, contributing to the further strengthening of the Greek shipbuilding industry and the maritime economy as a whole.
