Wild fights, threats and beatings seem to have been part of the couple’s daily routine in Kalamata, which on Monday morning (1.6.26) ended in tragedy with the 39-year-old woman falling dead at the hands of her husband. Tragic figures were the couple’s two children aged 6 and 10 who were sleeping in the next room.
More specifically, shortly before 2am police received calls about an incident of domestic violence as a woman was calling for help from inside an apartment in Kalamata. Neighbours feared the worst and informed police. Within 5 minutes 2 police cars arrived at the scene, but neighbours were told the shouting had stopped.
The 39-year-old woman and mother of two was now dead inside the apartment. A knife was even found in her hand, while her 41-year-old husband was covered in blood.
He was slow to open up to officers. When he did, officers were confronted with the brutal femicide.
What he claims
.
The perpetrator was quick to confess to his crime. However, he claimed he was in legal defence because – he told officers – he was asleep and suddenly opened his eyes and saw his wife above him threatening him with a knife.
He claims he struggled with her, took the knife from her and killed her.
This scenario, however, does not coincide with the coroner’s findings, as no defensive wounds were found on his body.
Answers are to be provided by both the forensic report and the autopsy – autopsy that has been ordered, while now the next act of the tragedy will be filmed at the Kalamata Magistrate’s Court, where the 41-year-old will be called to apologize before the prosecuting authorities.
The fights and threats
After the crime, the neighborhood spoke. Fights were frequent between the couple as the 41-year-old was pathologically jealous of the unfortunate 39-year-old and accused her of having extramarital affairs. In fact, in one of the fights, the 39-year-old revealed that he was hitting her with his belt.
The constant fighting appears to be the reason why despite the shouting, the two little girls in the family did not wake up.
The children of the family who are in hospital have been examined by a coroner and do not appear to have been conscious.
So police are considering the following possibilities: either that the children were also living under terror or the fights were so frequent that they were now considered normal.
