Serious incidents occurred in the Zvernets area when residents and members of the Greek community protested against the construction of a tourist facility in an area considered a protected environmental zone.
The protesters attempted to block the construction of a hotel complex, resulting in clashes and injuries. Among the injured was a Greek citizen, a member of the Greek ethnic minority.
The Greek Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing its deep concern over the events. As stated, the Embassy of Greece in Tirana immediately took all necessary steps to provide the injured man with the necessary consular and medical support.
At the same time, the Greek side asked the Albanian authorities to fully investigate the incidents and assign responsibilities where they arise, while it is noted that there has already been an initial response from the competent authorities of Albania.
In its statement, the Greek Foreign Ministry stresses the importance of the full implementation of the rule of law, the protection of the property rights of members of the Greek national minority, as well as the preservation of protected environmental areas.
It is also stressed that respect for these principles is directly linked to Albania’s European course and its alignment with the European acquis, which is a basic condition for the progress of its accession process to the European Union.
