The new fines for travelling without a ticket on public transport in Athens and Thessaloniki come into force from today, Saturday 30 May, in order to reduce ticket evasion.
Passengers found without a valid or validated ticket will now face a fine of 100 euros, while those entitled to a reduced fare will be fined 50 euros.
The offender can pay half the amount, i.e. 50 euros, if within ten days of the confirmation of the offence they obtain an unlimited travel card of at least thirty days.
Until now, the penalty for not having a ticket was €72 for the regular fare and €30 for the reduced fare.
The relevant ministerial decision activating Law 5290/2026, passed a few months ago, was published in the Government Gazette on May 28 and is effective from today, May 30, 2026.
