The United States and Iran have reached a framework agreement to extend the ceasefire, but it must be approved by US President Donald Trump, the news website Axios reported, hours after Tehran targeted a US airbase in Kuwait over the shooting down of Iranian roads and US strikes on a ground control station in the port city of Bandar Abbas.
According to the Axios report, the two sides agreed to a 60-day memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire and start negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. That plan has yet to be approved by Trump.
There is currently no confirmation of the report, which has nevertheless led to a drop in oil prices in the markets.
Trump has repeatedly said the end of the war is “near”, but on Wednesday told his cabinet that he was still not satisfied with the negotiations and stressed that Washington was not discussing easing sanctions, one of Tehran’s key demands.
Isak Dar, the foreign minister of Pakistan, a country mediating the talks, will meet his US counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington tomorrow (Friday).
