The mother faces charges of child endangerment, while the 43-year-old was arrested for stealing electricity as she allegedly ran a cable through the canal water.

Serres: Two arrests in death of 10-year-old in Herakleia

Relatives and acquaintances of the family have gathered outside the courts, anxiously watching the developments, with the local community still in mourning. The aunt of the minor child speaking to Lionnews said no one expected this dramatic development. As she pointed out, she did not allow her own children to go near the site, as it was known that residents in the area were illegally running cables to supply water or electricity to their homes. She described the moment she was informed by her child of the tragic incident and rushed to alert the 10-year-old’s mother and the authorities, eventually finding the child unconscious.

At the same time, the testimony of the victim’s cousin, who said the 10-year-old wanted to enter the canal to take a bath, is shocking. Despite the fact that the child playing with him explicitly warned him not to do so, stressing that ‘there is a draft’, the unfortunate boy ignored the danger and dived into the water. The relatives’ accounts suggest that local children were aware of the danger of the canal due to the cables.

The chronicle of the tragedy began on Wednesday afternoon when the 10-year-old boy, a member of the Roma community, escaped the attention of his relatives. As soon as his absence was noticed, the police, the ambulance and the fire brigade were immediately mobilised. Men of the Sidirokastro Fire Brigade finally retrieved the lifeless body of the child from the canal. The 10-year-old boy was first transferred to the Herakleia Health Center and then to the Serres General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The police investigation is in full swing in order to fully clarify the exact circumstances of the accident, while the forensic examination to be carried out in Thessaloniki is expected to shed light on the cause of death.
