US armed forces have destroyed four Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles that they believed posed a “threat” and struck a drone control base in southern Iran, media reported in the early hours of this morning; it is the second US military operation against the Islamic Republic this week.

The four downed unmanned aerial assault vehicles “posed a threat to US (armed) forces and commercial (maritime) traffic,” CNN and the New York Times, citing US officials, reported. Shells on the ground near Bandar Abbas prevented a fifth vehicle from taking off, according to the same sources.

Earlier, at around 01:30 (GMT), Iran’s FARS news agency reported that three explosions were heard east of the city of Bandar Abbas, where a strategic port is located in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier this week, Iranian media also reported explosions in the area, citing exchanges of fire with the US military. Tehran has accused Washington of violating a ceasefire in place since early April.
