A unique and controversial aerial photograph of Athens has been making the rounds on the internet in recent hours, capturing the capital city in a phase of historic transition.

The shot, which has gone viral, visually aligns two completely different worlds: the ancient Parthenon in the foreground and the under-construction Riviera Tower skyscraper in Elliniko, in the background of the coastline.

The visual effect has sparked heated debate and controversy among social media users.

The photo, taken from a high altitude (most likely from the area of the Turkovounia or Lycabettus with a powerful telephoto lens), creates a stark visual contrast.

The sacred rock of the Acropolis dominates at the bottom, while directly above, the tower of Elliniko, currently under construction, rises towards the Attic sky, “tearing” the familiar horizontal line of the city with the Saronic Gulf as a backdrop.

The reactions of citizens and internet users are divided into two camps.

On the one hand, many people speak of an “unorthography” and alteration of the historic landscape of Athens, expressing concern about the visual impact of the new high-rise buildings on the Attica skyline.

On the other hand, supporters of the project see the photograph as a symbol of evolution, modernization and economic development, stressing that Athens can combine its global cultural heritage with modern architecture.

At a time when all eyes are once again on the return of the Parthenon marbles, Greeks are speaking out about whether such buildings are consistent with the aesthetics of ancient Greek heritage.

Can the two elements coexist and what is our vision for the Athens of the future?
