Police have caught five people in the space of 24 hours for involvement in two separate cases of telephone fraud under the guise of “accountants” in areas of Kilkis and Pella.

In the first incident, an elderly woman in Kilkis received a phone call from a person posing as an accountant who persuaded her to collect money and valuables in her possession. The perpetrators obtained a total of €13,530 and jewellery worth around €7,000, which was received by a minor accomplice. Following police investigations, the minor was found with two other persons in a car used for their escape and arrested. The money and jewellery were returned to their owner, while officers also seized a revolver, 28 rounds of ammunition and a mobile phone.

In the second case, an elderly man from Pella was the target of a similar scam when an unknown person contacted him posing as an accountant and asking for 40,000 euros for an alleged outstanding financial debt. The man who turned up to receive the money was arrested in the act by the authorities.

A preliminary investigation is underway in both cases by the relevant police services.
