U.S. President Donald Trump said today that U.S. forces may have to strike Iran again, claiming he was just an hour away from deciding on a new strike before finally postponing a new attack on Tehran.

Trump spoke to reporters at the White House a day after he said he had postponed a planned new strike on Iran after Tehran submitted a new peace proposal.

“I abstained just an hour from making the decision to move forward today,” he said.

Trump also reiterated that Iranian leaders are “begging” for a deal but warned that the new US attack would come within days if no agreement is reached.

“Well, I mean, two or three days, maybe Friday, Saturday, Sunday, something, maybe early next week, a limited period of time, because we can’t allow them to have nuclear weapons,” he said.

Earlier, Iranian state media reported that Tehran’s latest peace proposal calls for an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, the withdrawal of US forces from areas near Iran and the payment of compensation for damages caused by the US-Israeli war. Deputy Foreign Minister Qasem Garibadi said Tehran also seeks the lifting of sanctions, the release of frozen funds and an end to the country’s naval blockade, according to IRNA.

These conditions do not appear to have changed compared to the previous proposal, which Trump called “garbage” and rejected, last week.

A diplomatic solution with Cuba is possible

Trump also said he believed a diplomatic solution could be reached with the Cuban government and that he could help the country, whether or not there is “regime change” on the island.

“I think so,” he replied when asked by reporters if a deal with Cuba is possible. “Cuba is calling us. They need help. Cuba is a failed state. Cuba needs help and that’s what we will do,” he said.

Washington calls Cuba’s current, communist government corrupt and incompetent and is pushing for regime change.
