Three tourists were seriously injured in Minorca, Spain, when part of a balcony from a building suddenly collapsed and fell on them while they were sitting outside a shop.

The women, two Greek women aged 37 and 38 and a 65-year-old British woman, were in Nova Square in Ciutadella having breakfast when the building’s decorative cornice came off and injured them in the head.

All three were taken to hospital, with reports of head injuries and minor fractures, while initial reports indicate that they escaped the worst.

Police and rescue forces immediately rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area and launching an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

As announced by the City Hall of Ciutadella, the emergency service was alerted at about 11:00 am, and the first police units already near the area arrived on the scene within a short time to provide assistance and secure the site.
