Italian military base was attacked in Arbil, capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, without causing any injuries, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said, without elaborating further.
“I strongly condemn the attack on an Italian base in Arbil. I have just spoken to our ambassador in Iraq and thankfully all our military personnel are safe and sound in their bunker,” he said in a post on X.
As part of an international counter-jihadist coalition led by Washington, Italian military personnel are training members of Kurdish security forces in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Since the start of the war in the Middle East, the Iraqi Kurdistan Region and Arbil, in northern Iraq, have suffered numerous attacks attributed to pro-Iranian organisations, most of which have been neutralised by anti-aircraft defences.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) were shot down over Arbil yesterday, Wednesday, by the international coalition stationed at the Arbil airport, according to a Kurdish security source.
AFP journalists heard powerful explosions near Arbil airport last night, caused by anti-aircraft defences targeting drones.
