The recent US decision to withdraw some 5,000 troops from Germany has brought back the question of its overall military presence in Europe and the role it plays in European security.
According to available figures, tens of thousands of US troops remain deployed in European countries, with Germany hosting the largest number. After reinforcements following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the number in the country had reached about 36,000 units.
A significant presence is also being recorded in other countries. Italy has more than 12,000 U.S. military personnel serving, while in the United Kingdom the number is more than 10,000. Spain has about 4,000 troops, although there have been political tensions over the use of the country’s bases in international operations.
U.S. forces in Europe are not just limited in numbers, but are linked to an extensive network of military installations. Bases such as Ramstein in Germany, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in the UK, Aviano in Italy and Lajes Field in the Azores are critical hubs for operations in Europe and the Middle East.
In addition, Stuttgart in Germany is home to the headquarters of the U.S. European Command as well as the Africa Command, which reinforces the region’s strategic role for U.S. operations.
Overall, the US presence in Europe remains pivotal to the security of the region, and any troop movements directly affect the balance in the Euro-Atlantic context
