Google today officially began construction in India on its largest artificial intelligence center outside the United States.

The giant US technology company had announced in October 2025 a $15 billion (12.81 billion euros) investment over five years to build in Visakhapatnam, popularly known as Vizag, in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, a major centre dedicated to artificial intelligence.

“Today marks the first concrete milestone in Google’s most important commitment to India’s digital future,” said Bikas Kolley, Google’s vice president responsible for global infrastructure, during the ceremony.

“This project represents an investment of $15 billion and aims to deliver a complete artificial intelligence ecosystem,”

“At the heart of this programme is the deployment of a gigawatt-scale data centre, specifically configured to meet the huge computational demand in the AI era,” he further said.

Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister of Technology, said he was “excited” about the project as Visakhapatnam will be connected through submarine cables to Singapore, South Africa and Australia.

“By making Vizag an international submarine cable access point, we are bringing a substantial differentiation from the existing Mumbai and Chennai facilities, which will enhance the resilience of India’s digital network and its economic security,” added Kolley.

“New strategic fibre-optic corridors will further strengthen India’s connectivity with the rest of the world,” he added.”This is a pivotal moment for India, for Vizag and for Google,” said Kolley.
