U.S. President Donald Trump made a positive reference to Greece and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, answering questions from reporters at the White House.
The US President described Greece as a “fantastic country”, noting that it has made substantial contributions in a number of areas and that it “understands the importance” of critical issues. Of Mitsotakis, he said he was a “terrible guy”.
The remarks were made in response to a recent interview with the Greek prime minister in the US conservative media outlet Breitbart.
In that interview, Mitsotakis focused on the need for a diplomatic solution between the US and Iran, stressing that an agreement could help end tensions in the Middle East and stabilise energy markets.
He also expressed the view that the US president has the ability to reach such an agreement, which would include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Breitbart’s Washington political editor Matthew Boyle, who was interviewed, the Prime Minister’s statement comes about a year after he said the US and the EU would soon reach a trade deal.
As noted, those predictions were confirmed by the subsequent agreement signed between the US government and the European Commission.
Recall that about a year ago, Donald Trump had taken a similarly positive stance on Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Greece in response to an interview with Breitbart.
